About AKF

The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and its sister Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) agencies have been experimenting with, and implementing, innovative solutions to development challenges for over 40 years.

The Foundation is based in Geneva, Switzerland, with branches and affiliates in Central and South Asia, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and North America. In every country, the Foundation works for the common good of all citizens, regardless of gender, origin, religion or political association.

Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A.(AKF USA), established in 1981, is a private, nondenominational, not-for-profit international organization committed to the struggle against hunger, disease and illiteracy, primarily in Africa and Asia. The Foundation works to address the root causes of poverty by supporting and sharing innovative solutions in the areas of health, education, rural development, civil society and the environment. Using community-based approaches to meet basic human needs, the Foundation builds the capacity of community and non-governmental organizations to have a lasting impact on reducing poverty.

The Foundation is an agency of the Aga Khan Development Network, a group of private development agencies, established by His Highness the Aga Khan to empower communities and individuals, often in disadvantaged circumstances and improve living conditions and opportunities, especially in Africa and Asia. His Highness the Aga Khan is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Aga Khan Foundation and 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. The Network’s agencies work for the common good of all citizens, regardless of their gender, origin or religion and its underlying impulse is the ethic of compassion for the vulnerable in society.
